Fitness Industry veteran Rocco Castellano and I met up in Las Vegas a few weeks ago. While we were hanging out we got into a really interesting discussion. So I grabbed a microphone ( the camera crapped out on me) and decided to interview Rocco on why he feels the industry is being sold a bill of goods.
This is a really eye opening interview, with an interesting point of view on what’s taking place in the fitness industry.
What I love about Rocco is he says it as it is. So there is no tip toeing around how he feels. And this conversation about why the industry is being sold a bill of goods is no different.
So listen in (yep it’s an audio interview) to what Rocco has to say…
Oh, by the way this is a pretty explosive interview with some “interesting language.” I’m just giving you a heads up.

OK, so basically Rocco sounds off on what is taking place in the fitness industry, why it’s happening and what needs to be done to fix it.
And according to Rocco, the fitness industry is in a state of confusion. This confusion is leading to a whole bunch of frustrated trainers and up and coming fitness entrepreneurs.
And because of this frustration and confusion we are grinding ourselves into the ground.
According to Rocco the confusion is caused by the “experts.”
It’s interesting to listen to Rocco explain why the “experts” are causing this.
What’s cool about this though is not only does he explain what the problem is, he shares what the solution is to fix it.
And that’s a good thing.
This is a pretty eye opening interview that will shed some light on a very interesting topic.

Say what you want about Rocco, the guy does not lack passion. He can take 30 pounds off you in 30 days AND drop 30 F bombs in a 30 minute interview. Lot of range with that guy. Thanks for the tips!
Yep – he knows his stuff, and has been in the industry for quite some time.
Was it only 30? Damn… I better get back on my game. It should have been at least 40.
Yeah. I was wondering why you were only around 30. Haha lol
Hmmm, a toned down Rocco, now that’s funny.
I agree that we are being sold a bill of goods, but unfortunately there are so many “sheep” that haven’t a clue. We have too many trainers that get into our industry for the wrong reason, then fall into the trap you speak about in this interview.
Many other trainers fall into the “4-Hour Work Week” mentality that sets up unrealistic expectations right off the bat. They immediately try to move away from what they say they got into the industry to do…help others achieve their health and fitness goals.
There are sooooo many other examples, but I’ll save them for another time…
Yeah, a toned down Rocco is funny. I couldn’t even imagine that. It’s funny you mention the 4 hour work week. Just this week alone I’ve had three people tell me how much that has screwed them up. It’s a cool philosphy, but why would you only want to work in something for 4 hours if you love doing it?
If you love it, then you’re not going to want to do it for only 4 hours a week.
Haha, just my $.02
I love when Gary Vaynerchuk explains in his book “Crush It” that you will have to work harder and longer to increase your personal brand, not less… but working at what you love will create an environment to make you want to work harder.
Greg… I’m right there with you about so many other examples.
Been in the industry 32 years. Have seen so many “gurus” peddle the next best way to make money. Shoot I know why I got in business, I knew who I wanted to work with, to have some stranger sell me a new way to make money working “on” my business–not in it? WTH–I got in business to be in business of working with and helping people. 4 Hour Workweek–what a crock of B.S. Oh wait–bootcamp 3.0 is now better than the last best product 2.0 that would change your life. And let’s team up and promote each other’s product every other month. Your turn this month–my turn next month. Good God–you’re in business–take some business classes, marketing classes, and be in business. Waiting for the next 4.0 blueprint!!! woooooo-woooooo getting out my credit card–NOT.
Damn, You got me Randy, I was going to launch the 5.0 Blueprint and just skip over the 4.0. Just kidding
It’s good to hear your opinion since you’ve been in the industry for a little while, and you’ve seen a lot of things changing.
Hope all is well with you and your business Randy.
Hey Randy…
I thought you had me beat by 2 years but when I went back and did the math, I realized I have been in the business now 32 years. It is my wish that all of my experience will help the little grasshoppers out there to grow into successful fitness business ninjas… or something like that.
Okay – wow! This interview sure reminds me of myself from not too long ago. Seriously, Rocco, were you picturing me in your head?!
I will pass this along to some fitness pros I know, who have gotten snookered by the so-called experts. Thanks, guys!!
Thank you Liz for taking a listen to the interview and passing this along. I really appreciate it. I’m glad this was helpful to you.
Hey Erik,
Great post!
I’m going to share this one with some of the fitness pros. There are so many diets and exercise routines, it sometimes becomes very difficult to know if you are finding the most reliable techniques or if you’re being sold a bill of goods!
Your post provided real good insights.
I always look forward to reading your posts, keep sharing!

Thanks Rick. I appreciate the comment. This interview with Rocco will definitely help fitness pros, and regular fitness enthusiasts weed out the crap. I learned a bunch from what he was saying and will apply it to everything I purchase from now on.
Yes Liz,
I actually was picturing you in my head when I was doing this interview… lol.
